What's SATREPS-NyMo?

Science and Technology Research Partnership for Sustainable Development Science and Technology Research Partnership for Sustainable Development (SATREPS) is a program for joint research cooperation between Japan and developing countries for resolving global issues, e.g., environment, energy, natural disaster prevention and infectious diseases control. SATREPS, sponsored by Japan Science and Technology Agency (JST) and Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), launched in 2008. The JST and JICA are the organizations under the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology of Japan, and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Japan, respectively.

In addition, the outline of SATREPS is listed in the following link.
  • Japan Science and Technology Agency (JST)
  • Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA)

  • Our “SATREPS-NyMo” is one of the projects under the SATREPS, and is entitled “Magmatic fluid supply into lakes Nyos and Monoun, and mitigation of natural disasters through capacity building in Cameroon”. It will start from April 2011 and continue until March 2016. Prof. Takeshi Ohba (Tokai University, Japan) is the leader of Japanese side of our project. The counterpart organization in Cameroon is Institute for Geological and Mining Research (IRGM), MINRESI, headed by Dr. Joseph V. Hell.
Outline of SATREPS-NyMo The goal of the project is to mitigate natural disasters in Cameroon through capacity building, specifically for the issues related to the Lakes Nyos and Monoun gas disaster that happened in 1986 and 1984, respectively. To accomplish the goal, we plan the following sub-projects as joint research between Japan and Cameroon in the following.

    • CO2 discharge system beneath Lakes Nyos and Monoun
    • hydrological regime around the lakes
    • eruptive history of volcanoes along Cameroon Volcanic Line (CVL)
    • CO2 distribution in Lakes Nyos, Monoun and other lakes along CVL
    • setup of experimental system for removing CO2-rich deep water to prevent gas rebuilding in Lake Monoun
    • continuation of geochemical monitoring of Lakes Nyos and Monoun.
During the project, scientific cooperation between the two countries will be performed through the exchange of scientists and students. The capacity building includes following projects under the SATREPS-Cameroon scholarship program.

    • donation of scientific instruments to Cameroonian institutions
    • technical training of young Cameroonians in Japan
These are the main components of the project, through which Cameroonian scientists can attain the project goals hand in hand with Japanese scientists.
